Saint Matthews has a large and active Sunday School program with around 70 children registered. We have a wonderful facility with a nursery and 4 fully stocked classrooms that are identified by color splashes around the doorways. These colors are also used to identify the different classes on bulletin boards so parents can easily find information.
Nursery/Toddler Class: This class meets in the Nursery with our staff members Art and Maribel. We use this play based environment to introduce the children to the basic bible stories, praying and have daily devotion time. The toddlers are not taught the Episcopal Children's Curriculum.
Pre-school/Kindergarten Class: Ages 3+ through Kindergarten. This class meets in the Blue Room. We work with parents to decide when children are ready to start formal instruction using the Episcopal Children's Curriculum; which is usually sometime after their third birthday.
Primary Class: For children entering 1st and 2nd Grades at the beginning of the school year. This class meets in the Orange Room.
Intermediate Class: For children entering 3rd Grade at the beginning of the school year. This class meets in the Green Room. This is the first year we have given this grade its own class due to the number of children registered.
Senior Class: This is our new class for this year (2011-12) for children in 4th, 5th and optional 6th grade. They will meet in the youth basement or Mathes Hall depending on the activity of the day. We aim to provide a program tailored to engaging this age group, and keeping them interested in attending Sunday School.
6th+: This is a stepping stone class between Sunday School and attending church. This informal Bible Study Discussion Class meets at 10:30AM for 30 minutes, then enters church for communion. We will review the need for this class once we have assessed the success of our new Senior Class. 6th plus graders are also encouraged to be Acloytes.
